This movie has been directed by one of the best Indian directors , Ritwik Ghatak. Most of his movies have a melancholic undertone and this movie is no exception. The movie beautifully portrays the life of a young independent woman who sacrifices her life , her youth to sustain her family, who were never appreciative of her efforts. Her father’s demise had a terrible impact on her and she often hallucinated him who urged him to be selfish, to think about herself and her own happiness. But fate had something else in store for her. She was soon detected with tuberculosis. She puked blood in silence but screamed out saying ” Dada ami bachte chai …’ (Brother, I want to live ! ) when she knew her end was near. The frames captured by Mr. Ritwik Ghatak has been phenomenal, he was able to capture raw human emotions through each of his frames. This is definitely a woman empowering movie. In times where the movie is set, women were restricted within the boundaries of her household. In those times , the protagonist chooses to move out , get herself educated and manages to support her family, quite contrary to the belief of a woman not being able to do anything but household chores.
